The Office of Study Abroad has joined the Generation Study Abroad Initiative, a national effort to meet America’s Global Education Challenge to expand study abroad opportunities throughout the U.S.

Generation Study Abroad is a five-year initiative developed by the Institute of International Education, which has committed $2 million to encourage “international experience through academic study abroad programs, internships, service-learning, and non-credit educational experiences.”

“We are already committed to increasing study abroad at BSU,” said Mike Sandy, director of the Office of Study Abroad. “This is a public effort to show our commitment. There are thousands and thousands of universities onboard and we’re signed up.”

With a goal to double the number of students studying abroad at BSU by the end of the decade, the Office of Study Abroad is working to increase scholarship opportunities; improving study abroad curricular integration; increasing study engagement in international service-learning, research and internships; and engaging study abroad alumni and improving study abroad operations.

The hope is the study abroad numbers can increase to 500 from 291.
