Members of the BSU community recently came together to commemorate the Asian Lunar New Year. The annual campus event drew a wide range of students, faculty and administrators to mark what is for the Asian world an important celebration.
“We are fortunate to be actually celebrating on the first day of calendar,” said Dr. Wing-kai To, history professor and coordinator of BSU’s Asian studies program. “There are many students at BSU who come from different backgrounds and others who are part of an exchange from their country,” he said, citing the importance of holding a celebration on campus.
The event gave students, faculty and other community members the chance to learn about the Asian culture, and featured authentic food, activities and music, along with the performance of the traditional lion dance.
Students got the opportunity to meet and interact with their Asian peers, learn how to write their name in characters, and much more.
The annual event has grown in popularity over the years; this year necessitated a move from the Dunn Conference Center to the larger campus center ballroom.
The celebration was cosponsored by the Asian Student Union, Korean Student Association and the Center for Multicultural Affairs. Also in attendance was Frederick Clark, executive vice president and vice president of external affairs. (Story by Heidi Belanger, University News)
