Senior Talia Martin of Cumberland, R.I., was one of 60 students nationwide accepted by the Council on Undergraduate Research to present her research at the annual Posters on the Hill event. She’ll be among the nation’s top student-researches, spending a day on Capitol Hill displaying their projects and discussing their findings with members of Congress. The event is designed to highlight the importance of undergraduate research.

This is the seventh straight year BSU has had at least one student accepted to what is considered the most competitive undergraduate research opportunity in the U.S.

Ms. Martin said by e-mail that she is “honored and excited” to have been selected.

Her research project, carried out last summer under the guidance of BSU physics Professor Ed Deveney, involved  building a system to stabilize laser frequencies for the university’s proposed Mangeto Optical Trap, which would use laser beams and magnetic fields to cool and trap atoms in order to more precisely study them.

“I love what I do and I really enjoy getting the opportunity to tell others about the great work being done in the BSU physics department. Getting to do that in such a high-profile venue makes it all the better,” said Ms. Martin, 33, who plans to attend graduate school and pursue a career in academia.

This year’s Posters on the Hill event will be held April 23. (Video by Nicholas Allende, University News)
