December 21, 2018

Over the last 46 years students have used their radios, boom box, Walkman, stereos, CD player, MP3 player and iPhones to tune in to 91.5 WBIM.

Chances are, most students didn’t have a clue as to where the Bridgewater State University station was being broadcast from.

That all changed when the station recently got a new, modern and visible space in the Rondileau Campus Center’s lower foyer.

“We’re making our presence known,” said Sean Meehan, 91.5 WBIM event director.

Since 1972, WBIM was housed in the top floor of the RCC.

“We were upstairs by the ballroom, near the women’s bathroom and hidden,” said Tyler Morgan, ’21, a double sociology and early childhood education major who also deejays for the station.

Thanks to funding from the President’s office, what used to be empty, unused space is now a glass-encased studio with brand new state-of-the art technology for the student-run station to use.

The soundproof studio boasts new microphones, computers, monitors and sound board.

“I love the new space because it’s a lot more open than being upstairs, people are more welcoming—they knock on the glass and ask what’s going on,” Tyler said.

DJ Alyssa Raymond, ’20 agrees that the new space is definitely more open.

“I love it, we are much more visible and people can see we are here,” she said.

The visibility has also encouraged others to get involved.

According to Tyler there are 30 more students working at the station this year compared to last.

“We are getting a lot more interns thanks to the publicity generated with the new studio,” Sean said. “We are very grateful to President (Frederick) Clark.”

The station can be heard over the airwaves at 91.5 FM and also online at onlineradiobox.com/us/wbim.

For more information, or to learn how to get involved, email, WBIM@bridgew.edu. To make song a request or on-air questions call, 508.531.1303. (Story and photos by Heather Harris, University News & Video)

Cryptography In Action

January 2, 2019

When thinking of secret codes, one’s mind might be drawn to a plot from a thrilling spy movie. Bridgewater State University’s Dr. Ward Heilman thinks of swiping a credit card.

Encryption, which is the process of limiting access to information through the use of encoding, plays a role in everyday tasks like sending an email, making a bank transaction and, of course, using a credit card. And, Heilman wants to ensure his students understand cryptography’s historical and modern applications.

“This is real,” said Heilman, a mathematics and computer science professor. “It’s real life.”

We sat down with three students in his graduate computer science cryptography course to discuss their class projects.

Modernizing the Enigma machine

The Germans used Enigma machines in World War II to send secret messages to troops. Amanda Morrison, G’20, brought the technology into the 21stcentury.

Enigma machines rely on a series of letter substitutions, and Morrison made a digital version using computer coding. She even created a program that allows users to customize the substitutions.

“I thought it would be a unique challenge,” the Halifax resident said. “A lot of the other things we learned in class are things that are already coded. I wanted to turn hardware into software.”

And, she realized a job in encryption may be a good career fit.

Bridgewater professors “have been able to point me in a direction with the tools I need to succeed in this field,” she said.

From childhood diary to graduate school project

Many children try to keep prying eyes away from their journals. But, few likely go as far as Minji Lee, ’18.

Lee, an international student from South Korea who speaks five languages, matched letters in her native Korean with English letters, allowing her to translate Korean into a jumble of English letters that were meaningless without knowing the code. For her project, Lee turned her childhood code into a computer program.

She learned about programming and working with different languages, however, completing the project meant much more.

“Personally, that was my elementary school memory,” said Lee, who is continuing her studies at Northeastern University. “It was very surprising and at the same time very touching that I could make it actually work on a computer.”

When there’s more than meets the eye

You’ve probably heard of artists inserting hidden messages in their artwork. But, you can also literally hide messages within a digital image, a form of steganography.

While encryption protects messages from being decoded, “in steganography, you’re hiding the very existence of that message,” said Andy Couto, ’15, G’19, who made a steganography toolkit easier to use.

Steganography could enable viruses to infect computers or a whistleblower to pass information to a journalist, said Couto, who is from Middleboro.

“I want to go into software coding and programming,” she said. “Learning about all these different things is only broadening my mind about things that I can do.” (Story and photos by Brian Benson, University News & Video)

Screen Writing

Dr. Ann DuCille, ’71, who spent four decades as a college professor, has written a book examining the connections between race and television. Published in September by Duke University Press, Technicolored: Reflections on Race in the Time of TV, finds the feminist critic and scholar – as well as one-time Bridgewater State English professor – looking at the ways race has been depicted on the small screen over the past 60 years.

In her new book, duCille contents that television influences how people view the world, and suggests that producers too often portray blacks as villains, victims, and other unflattering stereotypes.

“I don’t think we should indulge in some kind of censorship or only show positives, but I would just argue for more variety,” duCille said. “I see so many of the same type of characters.”

DuCille, who earned graduate degrees in American civilization and creative writing from Brown University after receiving her undergraduate degree in English, says Bridgewater faculty members helped spark her interest in teaching. In fact, she recalls how she took Dr. Joseph DeRocco’s course in the Romantic poets twice – once for a grade and once just for fun.

“It was just a wonderful time to be young and in love with learning,” she said. “It was so important and such a gift from the Bridgewater faculty that I hoped I would be able to pay it forward and pass it on to my students.”

DuCille was one of the first three black women on the faculty at Hamilton College, where her career began. She spent most of the ensuing years at Wesleyan University, and currently serves as visiting professor of gender studies at Brown’s Pembroke Center for Teaching and Research on Women.

She fondly recalls her time as a Bridgewater student, when she attended with childhood friends Janice Dunlevy and Lynn (Santilli) Geyer, both class of ’71; and made new lifelong acquaintances in sisters Josephine,’71, and Ursula, ’73, Bernard

Ducille acknowledges that her undergraduate experience set her on the path to becoming the educator, theorist and writer she is today.

“Although there was a part of me that fantasized about being a lawyer, I think it was always in me to be a teacher and Bridgewater was the place to go,” she said. (Story by Brian Benson, University News & Video)

Faculty Profile: Dr. Margaret Brooks

Whenever Dr. Margaret Brooks greets a new class of students at Bridgewater State University, she sees something very familiar in the faces filling the classroom: Herself.

A class full of BSU students typically includes young people balancing work with studies, aiming to be first in their family to graduate college, or raising children of their own. Brooks, a high school dropout turned Ivy League graduate, relates to their challenges because she’s lived them.

“This is my home,” said Brooks, who has taught economics at Bridgewater State for more than three decades. “Bridgewater is filling an important role in these students’ lives and I wanted to be part of that.”

Attending college herself was almost an insurmountable obstacle for Brooks, who faced poverty growing up in Warwick, Rhode Island, as one of nine children. She recalls having only two outfits per school year and helping her father with his job as a janitor. She left high school despite being an honors student.

“Growing up in extreme poverty, it was just a very difficult time,” she said. “Ultimately, though, I kept my dream of going to college.”

She received her GED, became a first-generation college student, and kept going – eventually earning a doctorate degree. Brooks, who pursued higher education while raising her own children, began at Community College of Rhode Island. A professor and the college’s president recommended her for admission to Brown University as an undergraduate through the Resumed Undergraduate Education Program. Brooks graduated magna cum laude with a degree in economics. She subsequently completed her master’s and doctoral degrees in economics at the university.

Brooks, who was recently highlighted in Providence Business News’ monthly top businesswomen feature, does more than teach. She also advocates for financial literacy education at all levels through her leadership of the Rhode Island Jump$tart Coalition, the Rhode Island Council for Economic Education, and BSU’s Center for Economic Education and Office of Financial Literacy Initiatives.

“Students need information to make good financial decisions,” she said.

Brooks traces her passion for economics back to childhood discussions with her father about the news of the day. She sees her work as a professor as a way to influence students and make the world a better place.

Her story of perseverance is also a lesson in itself for BSU students.

“Just keep trying, just keep knocking on that door. If they don’t answer, keep knocking. If they still don’t answer, find another door,” she said. “You’ll reach your goal.” (Story by Brian Benson, University News & Video)

Gayle Cameron, ’78, speaks behind a podium

Life, like the roll of a dice, can be unpredictable. But, Gayle Cameron, ’78, knows firsthand how a Bridgewater State education pays dividends wherever a graduate ends up.

As a student, she never imagined she’d one day sit at the head of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, tasked with licensing and overseeing casinos and slots parlors in the Bay State. She views her position as an opportunity to “stand up for what’s right on behalf of the commonwealth.”

After all, she says: “There’s a lot of money in the casino industry.” It’s an industry that has been closely scrutinized by lawmakers and the media as it has grown since 2011, thanks to the expansion of the state’s gaming laws.

Cameron, who has served on the commission since 2012 and became interim chair in September, studied health and physical education at Bridgewater. She initially thought she’d become a teacher and coach. With job opportunities in education scarce back when she received her degree, she followed the advice of a friend and became a New Jersey State Police trooper.Gayle Cameron, ’78

“The field I entered was the people business, and one that required leadership and required physical skills, as well as an ability to understand the law,” said Cameron. “Both my (Bridgewater) athletics and undergraduate work led me to be successful in that field.”

She spent most of her law enforcement career in New Jersey, leading the agency’s investigations branch, whose authority included casino regulation. She also vetted people and companies as part of awarding licenses for Atlantic City’s casinos, and spent time undercover. Cameron retired with the second-highest rank of deputy superintendent.

At Bridgewater, she played volleyball, basketball and softball. She credited teammates, coaches and professors with teaching her about time management, having a strong work ethic and being a humble leader.

“A lot of those lessons that started as an undergraduate really serve me well now,” she said.

Cameron’s work on the commission, where she has served with Ivy League graduates and former state judges, shows that a Bridgewater education can take you anywhere.

She has some advice for today’s BSU students: “Don’t let anyone tell you you can’t, your degree isn’t good enough, or you’re not prepared to do more. I think you’re every bit as prepared coming from Bridgewater.” (Story by Brian Benson, University News & Video)

Dr. Arnaa Alcon in her office

The New Year brings a new title for Dr. Arnaa Alcon who, as of Jan. 2, is dean of Bridgewater State University’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

“I am deeply honored and very excited about the opportunity to work with colleagues across the university and especially in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, to realize a shared, evolving and ambitious vision of the best college and BSU we can be,” Dr. Alcon said.

Since August of 2017, Dr. Alcon has served as interim dean of the college, and is credited during that time with prioritizing diversity, inclusion, interdisciplinary programs, student recruitment and retention, strategic and budgetary planning, and collaborative initiatives.

Prior to her appointment as interim dean, Dr. Alcon led the School of Social Work, serving as chair since 2009 and as acting coordinator of the master’s of social work program from 2010 to 2011.

The focus of her teaching and applied research is in the areas of aging, social policy, and financial literacy. Dr. Alcon’s scholarship has been presented at national social work, gerontology, and leadership conferences.

Looking ahead, Dr. Alcon is excited to continue her work at BSU.

“The College of Humanities and Social Sciences is the academic home for extraordinary students, faculty, staff and programs. We have a history of achievement and service of which to be proud and a future that offers practically unlimited possibilities in teaching, learning and scholarship,” she said.

Dr. Alcon holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Amherst College, a master’s of social work degree and certificate in gerontology from Boston University, and a doctorate degree from the Heller School at Brandeis University. (Story by Heather Harris Michonski, University News & Video)

Jason Desrosier, '10, headshot

As a childhood gang member in a poor Philadelphia neighborhood, Jason Desrosier, ’10, didn’t think much about education. Bridgewater State changed his outlook, instilling a lasting commitment to help others.

“Going to Bridgewater provided the foundation for the mentality of service learning and community service and really helping people,” said Desrosier, who works at the affordable housing nonprofit Allston Brighton Community Development Corporation.

The Philadelphia of Desrosier’s youth was a city where crack and other drugs were becoming more prevalent. His mother bounced between jobs and formal education was not emphasized.

As a teen, Desrosier moved in with family in suburban Massachusetts. He struggled to adjust to a place where education was valued and ultimately dropped out of high school. He then earned his GED, and, at the urging of friends, applied to Bridgewater.

“I never really planned on going to college,” he recalled. “I don’t think I particularly valued it.”

Desrosier found his calling within Bridgewater’s Department of Sociology. Many topics sociologists study are ones he had encountered in life, so he pulled from personal experiences in his academic work. He also became involved in student organizations such as Free the Children, which helps build schools and supports children’s rights in poor countries.

“Being accepted and doing well in classes provided a foundation for me to really value education,” said Desrosier, who in addition to majoring in sociology, minored in social work.

Desrosier praised supportive faculty such as Dr. Michele Wakin, an associate professor of sociology.

“Jason never let an opportunity go by,” Wakin said. “When other students might have given up, he never did.”

Desrosier earned a master’s degree in urban and regional policy from Northeastern University. He followed his passion for giving back, from assisting the homeless at Father Bill’s & Mainspring, to working on a city of Boston initiative to help students in low-performing schools succeed.

Desrosier is the manager of community building and engagement at Allston Brighton CDC. His multi-faceted job includes building residents’ leadership skills and tackling development and transportation planning.

“Jason’s really young, not only to have found a series of jobs, but a meaningful career and something that benefits the commonwealth,” Wakin said.

He’s also back on campus as a part-time instructor.

Desrosier encourages BSU students who face challenges like he did to become active on campus, step out of their comfort zone, and expand their networks.

“It’s easy to feel you’re the only one experiencing what you’re experiencing,” he said. “Bridgewater brings together students from all different kinds of experiences and backgrounds. Know you’re not alone.” (Story by Brian Benson, University News & Video)

Patrick Collins with the book he wrote

If you met Patrick Collins, ’20, as a young teen, you’d be hard-pressed to imagine him jogging around his neighborhood, never mind one day running track at Bridgewater State University.

During much of his time in middle school, Patrick suffered fatigue, sinus congestion, aches, and other ailments that left him struggling to get out of bed. Despite dozens of doctors’ visits, no one could tell him what was wrong.

“It was an emotional and mental struggle throughout that whole time period,” Patrick recalled. “I just wanted to go and play with my friends and I wasn’t able to. It really led to a lot of isolation and a feeling of loneliness.”

The culprit turned out to be Lyme disease, which Patrick learned only after visiting a relative who specialized in treating the ailment. It appears he had contracted the disease from a tick bite discovered after returning home from a camp.

Medication helped, but the illness ravaged his body. Brain damage left him reading at a first-grade level. A doctor said he’d probably never go back to school and Patrick became extremely depressed. He even attempted suicide.

Patrick Collins competing for BSU in track

“That was the turning point of the story and of my life,” said Patrick, who chronicled his experience in a book titled, Fighting for My Life: How I Found God and Beat Lyme Disease. “When I lived after that, I had something inside of me that said I have more to live for.”

Patrick credits his family and faith with helping him triumph. He re-learned to read, write and walk. Infectious disease specialist Dr. Fredric Silverblatt told him exercise helps one overcome Lyme. Patrick took that advice to heart and pressed onward.

His battle shows “that there’s always hope and that there’s always purpose,” said Patrick, an Attleboro High School graduate. “In suffering, a lot of times we might feel overwhelmed that everything is happening to us. I want readers to know there’s always a purpose to their suffering and to look at it from a different perspective.”

Patrick, who transferred from UMass-Dartmouth, is majoring in physical education with a concentration in exercise science/health fitness. He praises BSU’s welcoming atmosphere and faculty who challenge him and offer career guidance while being open to hearing his story.

Now, he focuses on taking care of himself by exercising and eating right. He also pauses before track practices to reflect on his remarkable journey.

“It blows me away,” Patrick said. “I worked with a physical therapist to learn to walk again and now I’m running at a collegiate level… Just being in college and being on the track team here means so much more to me because I’ve worked so hard to get here and I’ve come so far.” (Story and top photo by Brian Benson, University News & Video; photo on right contributed by BSU Athletics)

Student Profile: Gina Anderson

Gina and Sarah Anderson on Boyden quad

Looking at her today, it doesn’t seem possible that going to college was once an uncertainty for Gina Anderson.

Often graduating high school seniors don’t think twice about continuing their education, but Gina had some perceived limitations that almost diverted her.

Not only is Gina deaf in one ear, but she also has intellectual disabilities that require medication.

“After she graduated from high school, she said she wanted to go to college. I thought; why shouldn’t I let her go,” said Sarah Anderson, Gina’s mother.

Growing up in Florida, most of Gina’s education took place in self-contained classrooms where she participated in special education programs. Attending college wasn’t necessarily promoted.

When Gina announced her desire to further her education, Sarah did some research and discovered Bridgewater State University’s Inclusive Concurrent Enrollment Initiative (ICEI) program.

The ICEI program at BSU is an inclusive postsecondary program for young adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities.

Students share the same experiences as their college-aged peers in academics, socialization, career development and independent living. Peer mentors are also in place to help ICEI students whenever necessary.

Despite the fact that Bridgewater was more than 1,000 miles away, Sarah’s interest was piqued and together with Gina, she flew up from Florida to visit campus and learn more about ICEI.

“I didn’t know what to expect, but after my interview I thought this is really cool, it’s a real college and knew I wanted to go,” Gina, 20, said.

To fulfill Gina’s college dream Sarah made the decision to move the family, including Gina’s younger sister Elizabeth, 17, to Massachusetts. Sarah found work as a special education coordinator in the Quincy public school district and Gina began her BSU journey.

For two years Gina has enrolled in BSU classes, including American history, western civilization and anthropology, and even opted to move and live on the Bridgewater campus this year where she has a roommate.

“I don’t feel like a student with a disability, I really don’t. I know I am part of the ICEI program, but I don’t see it as a program, I am an actual student,” Gina said.

Aside from taking classes, Gina is also learning to do laundry, clean, and develop time management skills.

“She has gotten so much more independent, more mature and is better able to advocate for herself,” said Kate Jesson, Gina’s ICEI educational coach. “She’s doing amazing.”

It was previously unthinkable that Gina would ever be capable of using public transportation by herself, but that is exactly what she learned to do this fall and often travels on a MBTA train from Bridgewater to Quincy to visit her mother at work.

“This is helping give her the last push over the hump of things that I can’t teach her at home as a mom.

Through ICEI she is able to have these experiences and get ready for what’s next,” Sarah said. “This is good practice so she can later live on her own.”

After ICEI, Gina plans to embark on a career as a paraprofessional, specifically with non-verbal students. This past summer, she worked with non-verbal students during an internship at a special education preschool.

“I feel a special connection to them, I see myself in them when I was little,” Gina said.

Moving from Florida to Massachusetts to participate in the Bridgewater State University ICEI program has proven to be a positive-life altering decision.

“We changed our whole lives so she could come here and get this experience because I knew what it would do,” Sarah said. “People move for their jobs all the time. We moved so Gina could go to school and now she will be working. The ICEI program has given her the independence piece. She has learned skills with natural supports to help her figure things out.”

After mentoring Gina, Jesson is confident she will continue to achieve any goal she sets forth.

“She really is the shining example of what this program has to offer when you take advantage of it,” Jesson said. (Story by Heather Harris Michonski, University News & Video)

A World Turned "Upside Down"

January 18, 2019

On April 5, 1968, Bridgewater State College was in mourning.

The day before, devastating news reached campus that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was dead. The civil rights leader had been shot and killed in Memphis, Tennessee.

Bridgewater classes were cancelled and the mood was somber. According to the April 11, 1968 issue of the student newspaper, Campus Comment, more than 1,500 members of the campus community gathered at the school’s quadrangle to attend a memorial service in King’s honor.

The civil rights leader’s murder also inspired a group of faculty and students to create a petition asking the Massachusetts House of Representatives to enact the senate’s recently adopted civil right bill.

It was a time of unrest both on campus and beyond.

The day King was killed, pockets of riots erupted in Boston neighborhoods with angry protestors destroying and looting businesses. Amid safety concerns, Boston public schools opted to cut classes short.

Sydne Marrow (pictured above), director of Multicultural Affairs at BSU, was in the fourth grade at the time and recalls being lined up with her classmates as teachers scrambled.

“I was pulled aside and told my mother was coming to get me. Frantic, I said no, my mother doesn’t come to get me, I need to get my sister and walk home,” she said.

That’s when it was explained that King had been assassinated.

Marrow’s initial 9-year-old thought was, “‘What does this have to do with me?’ I didn’t know who he was. I had heard of him but didn’t understand the importance of his leadership.”

After King’s death the riots raged on and Marrow was no longer allowed to walk to school or take the train by herself to attend dance class.

“I remember very vividly my world being turned upside down. I lost my freedom to go on the train and where I wanted to go,” she said. “You never knew what was going to happen from one day to the next. Some days it was quiet, other days there were fires and it was all over the news.”

For many years, Bridgewater State has celebrated the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday in a variety of ways and with different types of service initiatives. This year, the university’s Community Service Center will host a community lunch and participate in a mural painting at Brockton’s Old Colony YMCA. See futher details and registration information for Monday’s event.

Upon returning home from his job as a supermarket cashier, then-17-year-old Bruce Wayne Gaines, ’73, learned of the assassination from his parents.

The tragedy ended up altering the course of his life.

At the time of the civil rights leader’s murder many higher education institutions sought to diversify undergraduate enrollment. In response, Bridgewater established PROGRESS, or the Program for Recruitment and Retention of Special Students, administered by Paul L. Gaines, the school’s first black administrator.

A “Martin Luther King Jr. Action Committee” was also formed. Its goals included creating programs to help African-American students succeed at Bridgewater.

“Without turmoil in the aftermath of Dr. King’s assassination and institutional reactions to it, I probably would not have considered Bridgewater State College. I had planned to attend the University of Rhode Island,” Bruce Gaines said. “Dr. King’s death did not end his dream but created energy and opportunity to empower me and millions of college students.”

Alumna Jeanne O. Foster, ’77, agreed.

“His death created a social conscience awakening among some white Americans in leadership positions and my generation was the first to benefit,” she said.

Foster was only 13 when King was assassinated, but it’s a day she will forever remember.

“We were not prepared as a people to lose him. There was no other voice in America that gave us hope and captured the hearts and minds of black people in the United States and the people of other races who supported us,” she said.

When King was killed, Bridgewater State’s first president of color, Dr. Dana Mohler-Faria was serving in the U.S. Air Force, stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, South Dakota.

“It was a time of deep racial divide and the reactions to Dr. King’s assassination were mixed,” he said.

The overall sense was, the march toward American justice would continue despite King’s death, Mohler-Faria said.

“It left many of us with a sense of great loss, and at the same time a drive to continue the important work to bring justice and healing to all Americans,” he said. “His legacy continues and much of the progress can be attributed to his vision and commitment to justice.”

Marrow often wonders what the world would look like today if King’s life hadn’t been cut short, particularly at a time when, at the national level, the country feels so politically polarized.

“I’d like to think if he continued his work we wouldn’t be in the situation we are in right now, because his message was one of peace and love across the lines. I would like to think he could have continued to gain people’s trust and allegiance, making allies with even more white leaders at that time who were realizing black people aren’t the enemy,” Marrow said. “He wasn’t a race person, he was looking for a kinder world.” (Story by Heather Harris Michonski, University News & Video)

University Celebrates Dr. King’s Legacy

January 22, 2019

Whether advocating for civil rights or the eradication of poverty, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. remained steadfast in his commitment to improve the lives of others. Members of the Bridgewater State University community on Monday demonstrated that same resolve.

“I think it’s important to acknowledge with action a person who was above all a person of action,” said Dr. Kelly Brotzman, executive director of BSU’s Martin Richard Institute for Social Justice.

Bridgewater State students, employees, alumni, friends and family members turned Monday’s holiday marking King’s birthday into a day of action. Volunteers tackled projects at Gifts to Give and the Old Colony YMCA, two Southeastern Massachusetts organizations dedicated to helping those in need.

“What Martin Luther King Jr. called upon us to do was to serve each other,” said President Frederick W. Clark Jr. “Bridgewater State University’s expression of that charge was evident in multiple sites on Monday through our students, staff, alumni, and community partners trying to make a difference for the region we serve.”

At Gifts to Give in Acushnet, volunteers sorted and inspected donated children’s clothing that will be distributed to families facing financial hardship. The organization seeks to provide children with high-quality clothing, books, toys and other items.

Volunteers also painted two murals at the Old Colony YMCA in Brockton. One mural by the entrance featured the word “welcome” in different languages The other brightened a space downstairs at the Y, and reflects the organization’s values. Volunteers also joined local youth in taking an African dance class.

“Remembering the strength that exists within our community is a big part of the day,” said Laura Mulvey, G’18, program manager at BSU’s Community Service Center.

The work of the YMCA and Gifts to Give is critical, as many struggle to make ends meet and the region faces significant income inequality, Brotzman said.

“If Dr. King was alive today he would be active and concerned about that level of poverty and inequality,” she said. (Story by Brian Benson, University News & Video)

Bridgewater State University is improving freshmen and transfer students’ first-year experience with help from an approximately $45,000 grant.

“The data shows that students, when they enter an institution and have a good experience immediately, are able to build on that throughout their time here and are able to have a better experience,” said Dr. Rita Miller, dean of undergraduate studies.

They are also more likely to complete their degree at BSU.

The grant was received from the Davis Educational Foundation, established by Stanton and Elisabeth Davis after Mr. Davis’s retirement as chairman of Shaw’s Supermarkets Inc. The foundation awards money to institutions around New England.

The Bridgewater grant fits nicely in the foundation’s goal to improve teaching and learning, said Leanne Greeley Bond, the organization’s director of grants and programs.

BSU administrators and faculty “clearly were solidly behind this proposal and committed to providing the best experience they can for first-year students,” she said.

Bridgewater will tap the expertise of employees and students to enhance experiences inside and outside the classroom.

English and philosophy courses new students take will be revamped, emphasizing skills such as revising writing and constructing arguments. Faculty who teach the classes will also participate in professional development, said Dr. Roben Torosyan, director of teaching and learning and a part-time philosophy faculty member.

Meanwhile, a new committee will bring together representatives from offices such as New Student and Family Programs, Transfer Services, Admission and the Academic Achievement Center.

“We have great programs offered by different offices,” Miller said. “We want to make sure the first-year experience we provide for students is coherent and consistent.”

The grant, which should lead to improvements by the fall, also supports travel to conferences so BSU officials can learn about best practices around the country.

This effort is particularly important at Bridgewater, given its many first-generation, low-income and minority students.

“They’re especially at risk of not being able to (stay at a university),” Torosyan said, pointing to work, family and other obligations. “They need our special focus.” (Story by Brian Benson, University News & Video)

When it comes to answering the question, “What did you do over winter break?” you’d be hard pressed to find someone with a better story than Giavanna Giorgio, ’20.

On Jan. 9, the Bridgewater State University student unexpectedly became part of a viral video featuring Ellen DeGeneres.

“The video began going viral on my flight home. I got off the plane to so many texts and notifications from social media about the video. I was overwhelmed with the attention but wouldn’t change it for the world,” Giavanna said.

During the taping of that day’s Ellen Show, Giavanna, who was in the audience that day, heard her name called by the famous comedienne and talk show host and was invited to the stage. [See the clip here.]

After hugging DeGeneres, the visibly excited Giavanna proclaimed for millions of viewers that she was a “student at Bridgewater State University studying speech pathology.”

Next, she stood by as DeGeneres successfully rolled a small ball across the entire set and through what resembled nothing so much as a mousehole during the show’s popular “Holey Roller” segment.

“I was amazed. I have seen attempts of this game on previous episodes so I knew it was hard, but she made it look so effortless,” Giavanna said. “I could tell by her reaction it really wasn’t as easy as she made it look. I think she was the most surprised that she got it in.”

Obtaining tickets to the Ellen Show was a dream come true. But being suddenly called to the stage to participate in the Holy Roller game seen by thousands of viewers worldwide was something else entirely.

“I was totally shocked. When I ran down to hug her it hadn’t really hit me I was being filmed. I was so nervous and so excited,” the Marshfield resident said. “I had never come close to doing anything like that before. Along with the nerves I had a lot of excitement and adrenaline, but it was still so much fun.”

When it was Giavanna’s turn to roll the ball for a chance to win $3,000, she wasn’t as successful as DeGeneres.

Losing the game didn’t matter.

“Just the experience of being able to see the show, never mind being on it, meant so much more to me than winning the game,” Giavanna said.

Getting to the Ellen Show was a lifelong dream, she said. For as long as she can remember she has watched the show daily with her mother. For three years she’d applied for tickets.

When her best friend and fellow Bear Jessica Perry-Gore, ’19, finally scored tickets, the two women knew it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and planned their trip to California where the show is taped.

“I don’t get caught up in celebrities too much, but I have always said if I could meet one I would want it to be Ellen. I admire her so much because of the way she changes people’s lives. Her catchphrase, ‘Be kind to one another’ says a lot about her personality,” Giavanna said. “She makes viewers like myself constantly question how they can be a better person and make a difference in their community.”

As far as the trip and experience being the highlight of her winter break, Giavanna said hands-down this is the best thing she’s ever been able to cross off her bucket list.

“I had an amazing time in Los Angeles. I am so grateful I was given the opportunity to go to the show. It still doesn’t feel real to me,” she said.

Matt Rushton and other SEMLEC officers

Imagine talking with an armed perpetrator who has taken hostages or someone threatening to commit suicide. What could you do to diffuse the situation? How do you save lives?

Those are questions crisis negotiators such as Bridgewater State University Assistant Chief of Police Matthew Rushton, ’15, might face any time their services are needed.

“Instead of going in with a SWAT team, the tactic is to get the person on the phone and get them to surrender peacefully,” said Rushton, who is part of a hostage negotiation team from the Southeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (SEMLEC).

Rushton (pictured below in the back row at far right) and teammates recently honed their skills at the 29th annual Crisis Negotiation Competition and Seminar hosted by Texas State University. They were among more than 300 officers and about 30 teams attending seminars and completing two days of mock hostage negotiation.

The SEMLEC team faced a complex scenario in which “radicals” took over an ICE detention facility. Experts judged teams’ performances.

“It was a great, great learning experience for us seeing the different techniques used around the country,” Rushton said. “It was also a great team building exercise.”

The SEMLEC group truly functions as a team. Some members gather information while others conduct negotiations, support the negotiator, and run a situation board that keeps track of the event timeline.

Rushton’s hostage negotiation skills prove valuable, even on campus where police are more likely to encounter a student facing mental health challenges.

“Your biggest tool is your ability to communicate,” he tells BSU officers. “All we need to do is just open up a conversation. It’s not about putting your hand on your gun or grabbing your Taser. Just have a conversation.”

BSU Detective Sgt. Kaitlyn Mori, ’06, also serves on the SEMLEC team, but did not travel to Texas.

SEMLEC, the first New England agency to attend the Texas training, is a mutual aid organization comprised of members of 31 departments, including BSU. It provides specialized services to its members.

“The benefit is the relationships that we’ve been able to build with these regional departments,” Rushton said, noting BSU officers’ ability to work quickly with other agencies could make a difference when it comes to peacefully resolving an incident on campus. “I don’t know how you put a price tag on that really.” (Story by Brian Benson, University News & Video)

Andrew Maylor, '85

As North Andover’s town manager, Andrew Maylor, ’85, works with a $100 million budget. He will soon watch over more than $60 billion as Massachusetts’ comptroller.

No matter how many zeroes there are, Maylor keeps his time as a Bridgewater State student in mind when overseeing public money.

“Certainly, in the 1980s, going to a state school was about what we could afford,” recalled Maylor, who graduated with a degree in management. “To be around people whose families were sacrificing to put themselves through college or who themselves were sacrificing – that sticks with you.”

Maylor will become state comptroller on Feb. 18, a position the longtime municipal official is honored to fill but wouldn’t have envisioned for himself when he was at Bridgewater. Back then, he envisioned a career in the private sector.

Several years after graduating, Maylor felt the urge to run for office in Winthrop. He lost, but made connections and served on a volunteer financial oversight committee. That led to a job in Winthrop’s government and a 25-year career in several communities.

Working in local government offers “the ability every day to interact with people in the community and find ways to improve how individual communities deliver services,” he said.

Maylor is proud of his efforts to improve North Andover’s finances and turn around the Essex Regional Retirement System. His municipal government skills will likely prove useful as he embarks on his new job, since he can relate to the myriad of services state government provides. Comptroller duties include independently overseeing state finances and services.

“I am confident that Andrew will bring the level of transparency, integrity and accountability necessary for this job,” Gov. Charlie Baker said in appointing Maylor.

Working in municipal government is about more than dollars and cents. And, Maylor was recently tested in a way few managers are.

North Andover was one of three Merrimack Valley communities devastated in early September by natural gas explosions and associated fires. First responders from around New England – including some BSU officers– aided the region.

Maylor needed to communicate with his colleagues in Lawrence and Andover, state officials, public safety workers, and residents affected by the disaster. He again turned to his Bridgewater education, where the charter member of the local chapter of the Sigma Chi fraternity met many different types of people.

“That personal touch, the ability to connect was largely built around relationships at Bridgewater State,” he said. (Story by Brian Benson, University News & Video; press conference photo by Tim Jean)

Faculty Members Examine Athletes and Opioids

New policy promotes safer use of painkillersSome former athletes will tell you they became addicted to opioids after being prescribed painkillers to treat an injury.

In an ongoing effort to help address this particular aspect of the nation’s opioid crisis, Bridgewater State University is taking a closer look at athletes and the possible impact painkillers can have.

“Opioid-based narcotics are truly gateway drugs,” Dr. James Leone said. “Here at Bridgewater we want to continue to talk about steps that are being taken or explore different steps we can take” to address the problem.

Research shows that nearly 7.7 million adolescents participated in interscholastic sports in 2013, and approximately 20 percent have sustained an injury that resulted in medical attention. Surgeries due to sports-related injuries have also increased.

How to best treat an athlete’s pain is the topic of a recent policy/white paper crafted by faculty at BSU and currently under consideration for inclusion in the Bridgewater Review.

“When you separate your shoulder, you will likely be seen by a physician and prescribed pain medication,” said Leone, professor of Public Health and Athletic Training. “Part of our job as athletic trainers is patient education in assessing the pain.”

When a doctor prescribes a 30-day supply of opioids, such as Percocet, many feel they have to use them because they were prescribed.

“People think they need to take the pills as prescribed or the pain will be unbearable,” Leone said. However, everyone has a different threshold when it comes to pain and may not need so much pain medication if any at all. “Some people are impervious to it, others are on the opposite end of the spectrum.”

In an effort to find better ways to manage pain, Leone, Dr. Suanne Maurer-Starks, Athletic Training Program director, Dr. Kimberly Wise, assistant professor of Athletic Training and Dr. Daniel A. Muse of Signature Health Care/Brockton Hospital researched and proposed solutions for athletic trainers to not only identify patients who may be at risk of opioid addiction, but also advocate for more preventative-based pain-management programs.

Together the group came up with a policy paper covering opioids and acute pain management in athletes.
“We are the eyes and ears in athletics and school systems, we work with doctors and see more of the every day, that’s why we crafted these recommendations to put out there to use,” Leone said.
It’s assumed, given the number of sports injuries each year, that adolescents may be prescribed opioid medications to manage their pain.

Because of this, one idea the policy suggests is to use “Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral, and Treatment” (SBIRT).

“The SBIRT approach may be most useful during vulnerable periods for athletes such as post-injury and post-surgical due to the high potential for pain and access to medications to treat it,” states the policy.

The rule of “three” is also recommended when taking pain killers. Once prescribed, patients should take no more than three opioid pills for three days, if needed.

“If it exceeds three days, then the pain needs to be re-assessed,” Leone said.

The goal with the policy and its recommendations is to share it with other outlets, including the National Athletic Trainers Association so others can benefit from the research. (Story by Heather Harris Michonski, University News & Video)

Adam Jabak and Dr. Thaya Paramanathan at Harvard conference

Ivy League students often take home the top awards at the National Collegiate Research Conference.

But, this year, Bridgewater State University’s Adam Jabak, ’20, joined the ranks of elite undergraduate researchers, when he earned first place in the physical sciences presentation category at the event, which is held at Harvard University.

“I was not expecting to get an award,” Adam said. “I wanted to have fun presenting. I was thinking there are so many intellectual, smart individuals there working on these projects. … I was just shocked.”

Adam’s achievement is impressive for any student. But, he’s come a long way – literally. The physics major moved from Lebanon to the United States, fleeing violence that plagued his home country, a place which also offered limited career opportunities.Adam Jabak works in Single Molecule Lab

He began his higher education journey at American University of Beirut the same year terror attacks killed more than 120 people in Lebanon. Adam came to the United States, enrolling at Massasoit Community College before transferring to BSU.

At Bridgewater, he excelled in Dr. Thaya Paramanathan’s Single Molecule Biophysics lab.

His conference presentation highlighted collaborative research between BSU, Northeastern University and Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden that could support development of better cancer medication. Their work focuses on understanding how a metal-based compound binds to DNA. Adam is continuing research done by Nicholas Bryden, ’17, the first Bridgewater student to present at the National Collegiate Research Conference.

Adam, who works in car sales, is appreciative of Bartlett internship and scholarship awards, as well as funding from the Adrian Tinsley Program, that allows him to focus more on his studies and research.

“He always goes overboard doing hard work,” Paramanathan said. “Hard work always gets rewarded.”

Adam, who is part of a team believed to be the first undergraduates to build dual-beam optical tweezers, excelled at the Harvard conference.

“I saw the passion come out of him and the confidence he had,” Paramanathan said.

A judge praised his strong personality and the quality and thoroughness of the research, which is at the graduate school level.

Adam, who hopes to continue studying biophysics in graduate school, said he appreciated the opportunity to network at the conference.

Students present at Harvard conference“I was really inspired just being there,” he said.

Caitlin Rowley (pictured in photo at right), ’19, a political science major (mentor: Dr. Melinda Tarsi), and Kelly Gately (pictured in photo at left), ’19, a biology and elementary education major (mentors: Dr. Heather Marella and Dr. Nicole Glen), were also selected to present at Harvard along with Adam. The three students’ work helps bolster Bridgewater State as an institution known for excellent student research.

Adam concurred: “It shows BSU has great opportunities for undergraduates to do research.”  (Story by Brian Benson, lab photo by Drew Cambra, ’19, University News & Video)

Recognizing a Pioneer

[Editor’s note: This is the first of four stories for Black History Month.]

Sarah A. Lewis was a pioneering Bridgewater student whose tale, absent a fortuitously placed photo album, could easily have been lost to history.

Lewis, a member of the Class of 1869, is believed to be Bridgewater’s first black graduate. Until Dr. Thomas Turner discovered her by accident, it was believed that Mary Hudson Onley, Class of 1912, held that title.

Turner, a professor emeritus of history, was conducting research in 2006 for his book, Not to be Ministered Unto, but to Minister: Bridgewater State University 1840-2010. In the midst of a long day in the Maxwell Library’s archives poring over Board of Higher Education documentation, he took a break and glanced at a photo album on a nearby table.

The album contained Lewis’ picture, and Turner knew an important part of Bridgewater’s history needed to be rewritten.

“That was one of the most exciting finds of the work I did,” Turner recalled.

Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Lewis moved with her family to Fall River. Her father worked as a waiter on the steam paddle vessel Empire State, which traveled between Fall River and New York City.

“This employment stabilized the family enough to allow Sarah, with the obvious encouragement and support of her parents, the privilege of pursuing her education rather than entering the workforce,” Dr. Philip Silvia, a professor emeritus of history, wrote in his pamphlet, Sarah Anna Lewis.

Lewis came to Bridgewater at a time when many of her peers worked in Fall River’s textile mills. She already had experience teaching and, as part of her acceptance to what was then the State Normal School at Bridgewater, committed to teach in Massachusetts public schools after graduation.

She completed her studies in 1869 – a year before Harvard University awarded its first undergraduate degree to a black student.

“We’ve always had a lot of diversity here,” Turner said, noting Bridgewater has attracted international students for much of its history. “That’s nothing new. Bridgewater has been open to it.”

Lewis’ teaching career ended abruptly when she wedded Edward A. Williams in 1871. Married women at that time were prohibited from teaching.

Without Lewis’ salary, the couple struggled financially. They moved to New York City, then back to Massachusetts to raise their children. Lewis worked as a seamstress and dressmaker. She died in 1939 at 92.

She continues to be recognized on campus, where she is a member of the Massachusetts Hall of Black Achievement. A painting of her hangs in Maxwell Library.

Turner wonders what would have happened if Lewis continued teaching.

“This is a woman who seems to be very bright,” he said. “Unfortunately, her career was cut off.” (Story by Brian Benson, University News & Video)
