Longtime Brockton public school administrator June A. Saba-Maguire, ’94, G’04, recently earned a prestigious leadership award in part for her efforts to expand relationships between the district and her alma mater.

Ms. Saba-Maguire, chief academic officer for the Brockton public schools, was selected by the Metro South Chamber of Commerce as the 20th recipient of its annual ATHENA Leadership Award.

The award is presented by local organizations in the United States and other nations to honor women as well as men for their  professional excellence, community service, and efforts to assist women in achieving their career and leadership goals.

“I’m really honored and humbled to be recognized in the way so many other women I so admire have been recognized in the past,” said Ms. Saba-Maguire, noting in particular that Brockton School Superintendent Kathleen Smith, whom she considers a mentor, previously won the award.

In selecting Ms. Saba-Maguire, the chamber cited, among other accomplishments, her work in developing the Footbridge program that brings 4th- and 5th-grade Brockton students to BSU for two weeks each summer, and her work to expand the “education block” time that BSU juniors preparing to become teachers spend in the Brockton schools.

Ms. Saba-Maguire said she initially forged those connections with BSU as principal of Brockton’s former Huntington Elementary School, believing that Brockton teachers and students and BSUundergraduates could all benefit.

“It became a really natural partnership,” she said, noting that she and Dr. Lisa Battaglino, dean of BSU’s College of Education and Allied Studies were both “really excited and passionate” about the expanded collaboration.

An elementary education major at BSU, Ms. Saba-Maguire returned to campus to receive a certificate of advanced graduate studies in educational leadership, later earning a masters’ degree in education from Cambridge College.

She credits BSU with preparing her well for her careers, recalling the encouragement and mentoring she received from professors and administrators during her time on campus.

Officials in the Brockton schools say Ms. Saba-Maguire has provided similar support and guidance to colleagues during her 24 years as a teacher and administrator in the district.

“That kind of work is important to me,” Ms. Saba-Maguire said, calling it a  matter of “looking to identify what people’s strengths are and making sure they have an opportunity to use those talents.”(Story by John Laidler for University News)

2018 Mandela Fellows Have Landed

June 21, 2018

They arrived from the airport by the bus full on Wednesday, representing nearly 50 different countries. They are among Africa’s brightest emerging public-management leaders, and 25 of them are on campus for a six-week academic and leadership institute.

For the third consecutive year, Bridgewater State University was been selected by the U.S. Department of State as a partner with the Mandela Washington Fellowship, the flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI).

Bridgewater is the only institution in Massachusetts hosting the fellows this summer. The only other host school in New England is Dartmouth College.

The announcement was made in the spring by the International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX), a nonprofit organization that specializes in global education and development. BSU was one of 27 U.S. colleges and universities in 22 states and the District of Columbia that will host academic and leadership institutes for 700 Mandela Washington Fellows this summer.

According to the organization’s website, “The six-week institutes will help develop the young leaders’ leadership skills through academic study, workshops, mentoring, networking with U.S. leaders, and collaboration with Americans. Each Institute will also offer insights into American society through site visits, leadership development, and cultural exchange. The 27 colleges and universities will help strengthen connections between the United States and Africa and establish enduring partnerships between Fellows and local communities and private businesses.”

The Mandela Washington Fellowship, which began in 2014, has engaged thousands of young leaders – women, men and individuals with disabilities – from both rural and urban areas in every country in Sub-Saharan Africa. Working closely with the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational Affairs and IREX, its implementing partner, host institutions are charged with designing academic programs that will challenge, inspire and empower these inspiring young leaders from Africa. Each participating institution has an area of specialty: Bridgewater’s is public management. Other schools focus on either business and entrepreneurship or civic leadership.

The Public Management Institute at Bridgewater, under the leadership of Dr. Wendy Haynes, interim assistant provost and senior international officer with the Dr. Edward W. Minnock Institute for Global Engagement, is tailored to fellows who work, or aspire to work, in various levels of government, regional or international organizations, or other publicly minded groups and think tanks. Dr. Michael Kryzanek, professor emeritus of the Department of Political Science, is the institute’s academic director.

The visiting fellows, ages 25-35, have established records of accomplishment in promoting innovation and positive change in their organizations, institutions, communities and countries. Learn more about our visiting fellows.

During the six-week program, fellows take part in networking and panel discussions with each other and U.S. leaders from the public, private and nonprofit sectors. There are also field trips to places such as local homeless shelters, municipal government offices and cultural sites.

Upon returning to their home countries, the fellows continue to build the skills they have developed during their time in the United States through support from U.S. embassies, USAID, and affiliated partners, through regional conferences, professional practicum experiences and mentoring opportunities.

The award-winning Family Performing Arts Center (FPAC) at Bridgewater State University will present Disney’s The Little Mermaid during the month of July, as its third summer theater offering.

Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories and the classic animated film, The Little Mermaid is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. With music by eight-time Academy Award winner, Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater and a compelling book by Doug Wright, the fishy fable has captured hearts with songs, including “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl” and “Part of Your World.”

FPAC has assembled a professional cast for The Little Mermaidincluding Hannah Lizotte of Easton playing Ariel; Andrea Giangreco of Burlington as Ursula; Dana Reid of Peabody as Sebastian the Crab; Mickey White of Duxbury as Prince Eric; Gary Bigelow of Fall River as King Triton; Professor Jim Quinn as Scuttle; and Kelsey Morgan, also of Bridgewater, as Flounder.

In the story Ariel, King Triton’s youngest daughter, wishes to pursue the human Prince Eric in the world above, bargaining with the evil sea witch, Ursula, to trade her tail for legs. But the bargain is not what it seems, and Ariel needs the help of her colorful friends, Flounder the fish, Scuttle the seagull, and Sebastian the crab to restore order under the sea.

FPAC’s production of The Little Mermaid is under the direction of Dori Bryan-Ployer of Holbrook. A number of the crew are BSU alumni, including: Eli Bigelow of Fall River, musical director; Joshua Moulding of Taunton, projection design; and Marissa Stanley of Acushnet, assistant choreographer. Current BSU student Meri Madden of Taunton is stage manager, while Brian Simons of Franklin, director, choreographer, designer, actor and vocalist with numerous theater companies in Southeastern Massachusetts, is costume designer. Andrew Child of East Bridgewater has designed the oversized puppets used in the production.

The Little Mermaid will be staged across two weekends in July in the Rondileau Campus Center Auditorium, 19 Park Ave., on the campus of at Bridgewater State University. Ample free parking is available near the auditorium. Performances are Friday, July 13, 7 p.m.; Saturday, July 14, 2 and 7 p.m.; Sunday, July 15, 2 p.m.; Friday, July 20, 7 p.m.; Saturday, July 21, 2 and 7 p.m.; and Sunday, July 22, 2 p.m.

More than 20,000 have attended FPAC productions since its inaugural season in 2016, including this year’s Once Upon a MattressShrekMary PoppinsBeauty and the Beastand Seussical. Mandela Fellows Officially Welcomed

The campus community officially welcomed to Bridgewater the 2018 cohort of Mandela Washington Fellows for a six-week academic and leadership institute.

“I look out on this group of people and I just see this whole community, this village,” said Dr. Wendy Haynes, interim assistant provost and senior international officer, who serves as director of BSU’s Mandela Washington Fellowship Institute.

The 25 fellows were spread around tables in the Dunn Conference Room, allowing them to mix and mingle with faculty members, trustees, administrators and local residents before and during Tuesday’s dinner.

In his remarks, President Frederick W. Clark Jr. reminded attendees that July 18 marks the centennial of Nelson Mandela’s birth. The United Nations will mark the event, and around the world people are being asked to do something for their community.

“It is that very challenge of making the world a better place that caused Bridgewater State University to rise up and compete to host the Mandela Fellows,” the president said.

This is the third consecutive year that BSU was selected by the U.S. Department of State as a partner with the Mandela Washington Fellowship, the flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative. Bridgewater is the only institution in Massachusetts hosting the fellows this summer. The only other host school in New England is Dartmouth College.

This year, the number of institutions selected to host the program was reduced to 27 from 40.

President Clark said the MFW Institute at Bridgewater is both rigorous and comprehensive, which is why the university was selected once again as a host institution.

“We know this program will make a difference in your lives and we hope in your communities,” he told the fellows. “We hope you will find your own true path and purpose.”

Attendees also heard from 2016 MWF alumnus Molalign Belay of Ethiopia, who recalled his time at BSU, saying the Mandela fellowship presented him with “a lifetime of opportunity.”

He went on to share memories of his time on campus two summers ago, and said his prime takeaway from the experience was the important role education can play in one’s life.

“Education is the most powerful weapon to change the world and for achieving social justice,” Mr. Belay said.

The dinner was sponsored by area resident Albert Senesie, founder, president and CEO of Victory Human Services. He shared part of his life story at the conclusion of Tuesday night’s dinner.

Both President Clark and Dr. Haynes told the fellows that the Mandela program’s benefits are reciprocal.

“You will learn from us, but I know we will learn much from you,” President Clark said.

Before leaving the podium, the president used the power granted to him to make sure the 2018 cohort of Mandela fellows felt at home in Bridgewater.

“From this time forward you are all BSU Bears,” he said. “You will forever be a part of this extended Bridgewater family.” (Story by John Winters, G’11, University News)

Ingrid Hasselquist, ’19, was proud of Bridgewater State University when it became the first school in the nation to implement a public-access Narcan program.

The move, which involved placing the anti-overdose drug at 50 locations around campus, ensures BSU has resources available should they be needed and promotes education about the opioid crisis, said Ingrid, a psychology and social work double major from Worcester.

“Maybe we can be agents to stop it in its tracks,” she said.

Ingrid recently worked with the Bridgewater State Police Department to organize Narcan trainings as part of a research project to see if the events change people’s attitudes, and ease any concerns about having Narcan on campus. Detective Sgt. Robert McEvoy led the trainings and also discussed opioids and their prevalence in Massachusetts. Participants took pre- and post-training tests to help Ingrid understand their knowledge and views about Narcan and opioids.

Ingrid received a $4,000 stipend through the Adrian Tinsley Program for Undergraduate Research to work on her study, which will also serve as her honors thesis. She hopes to present her work on and off campus.

And, if the results are positive, it could motivate other colleges and universities to follow BSU’s lead in making Narcan available, she said.

“There’s a lot of stigma around mental illness,” Ingrid said. “Addiction has its own negative attitudes about it.”

But, she thinks education is key to changing people’s views.

Ingrid hopes to become a substance-abuse counselor and help people overcome opioid addiction, a disease that has affected people she knows, as well as the broader Worcester community.

“I see it all the time when I’m in the community,” she said. “I really see how much of a problem it is. I just really want to be someone who can help.” (Story and photo by Brian Benson, University News)

Tiana Jurisic, ’20, admits she hates math. So, you might be surprised to learn she voluntarily spent part of her summer studying the subject.

Tiana participated in Bridgewater State University’s new Math Readiness Boot Camp, which is designed to prepare students to score high enough on a math placement exam to avoid taking a non-credit developmental math course.

“It’s never been my strong subject,” said Tiana, who is majoring in criminal justice and political science. “I knew I did not want to go into a non-credit course and spend money and have to do another one after it (to fulfill a graduation requirement).”

But, after completing a recent two-week boot camp session, Tiana scored high enough to go directly into a required, for-credit math course. Many of her peers in the boot camp achieved similar results.

Organizers expect 65 to 70 students will partake in the program, which is taking place this summer thanks to a BSU innovation grant. The free camp seeks to prepare students to improve their math ACCUPLACER exam score.

Donna Russo, ’72, the director of math services in the Academic Achievement Center and a part-time math instructor, leads the camp. Students also receive support from Chan Young Koh, ’19, a BSU student and tutor, and Michaela Santos, ’14, G’17, an academic coach.

“The hope is through that teamwork, we reach the unique and very specific needs of each student,” said Pat Carley, G’18, the boot camp project coordinator.

Ms. Santos works with students on note taking, time management, study habits and other skills that are relevant across the academic spectrum.

“While it applies right now in this boot camp, hopefully they take some of the things discussed and apply them to their broader classes,” she said.

Students learn math through lectures, worksheets, group assignments and other activities. The program covers topics such as algebra, fractions and decimals, Ms. Russo said.

“I hope they take away more confidence in their abilities,” she said.

Tiana praised digital elements of the course such as online Kahoot! quizzes. Ms. Russo excels at making sure students understand the material, she said.

“She didn’t make us feel stupid for not knowing the most basic stuff,” Tiana said. “A lot of us struggled with fractions and decimals. She was patient. She went over it as many times as needed. She left us a lot of time to ask questions and practice.”

For more information about the boot camp and to sign up for the final session in July, visit the Math Placement Test website. (Story and photos by Brian Benson, University News)

Bears Busting Out All Over

Traffic is moving a bit slower by the Welcome Center these days due to curious motorists pausing to catch a glimpse of BSU’s newest resident – a life-sized fiberglass bear.

Actually, the statue is one of four installed on campus, created by regional artists from Boston’s Street Theory gallery, with funding from the president’s office.

Aside from the Welcome Center, new bears are prowling in front of the Rondileau Campus Center, near the old clock tower on the East Campus, and nested in the pond area on the great lawn.

Jay Block, associate director of collections and exhibitions, organized the project, collaborating with Street Theory to commission the four artists to design the sculptures.

“My mission is to bring art to the campus that you wouldn’t normally see,” he said.

He opted to connect with the gallery because of its reputation and ability to create authentic pieces of art. The gallery’s professional muralists travel around the world, creating unique street art intended to empower communities.

The bears were ordered from an online family-run business that specializes in making fiberglass animals. Once the bears were made, they were delivered to the Street Theory gallery where artists Victor Quiñonez, Rob Gibbs, Sagie Vangelina, and Jeff Henriquez transformed them.

The only ground rules included the absence of trademarks, logos and profanity.

“I left it open to them because they are professional artists,” Mr. Block said. “I didn’t want to edit them because then you wouldn’t get a good product.”

For his “Oso Nativo” bear Mr. Quiñonez opted to go with vibrant colors; Mr. Gibbs used gold metallic paint for his striking “Egyptian Lover”; “Off Track”, created by Ms. Vangelin, displays graphic black-and-white lines mixed with color to create a psychedelic vibe; while Mr. Henriquez’s “Smokey” bear is predominately black and white with wisps of gray throughout.

A team from Facilities Management and Planning installed the bears. Mr. Block said the crew did a phenomenal job.

“They have gone in fairly easily,” he said. “The team has been a dream to work with... Everybody on this campus just wants to make it better,” he said.

The plan going forward is to add three to four smaller “cub” bears each year, designed by students, faculty, staff and alumni. The smaller bears will likely be installed inside campus buildings.

“There will be more bears,” Mr. Block said, but for now he hopes those who come across the new BSU statues enjoy them.

“I think they are absolutely fun,” he said. (Story by Heather Harris Michonski, University News)

Bridgewater State University is welcoming Richie Gomes Jr. as the new head coach of the women’s volleyball team.

Mr. Gomes’ experience includes five seasons as an assistant coach at Brown University and eight seasons as the head boys volleyball coach at his alma mater, Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School.

“Richie brings a wealth of skill and knowledge of the sport of volleyball to BSU,” said Dr. Marybeth Lamb, director of Athletics and Recreation. “His experience at Brown University with women’s volleyball will no doubt elevate our players’ game, both in the MASCAC as well as throughout the region.

“I am excited to see what he can do for our recruiting and I am sure that he will have an immediate impact on the team,” Dr. Lamb said.

Mr. Gomes, who graduated from New England Institute of Technology in 2014, coached the top 18U team at Blast Volleyball Club from 2012 to 2015, and has served as the head coach for the Coastal Boys team at the Bay State Games since 2011.

“I’m very thankful to Dr. Marybeth Lamb for giving me this opportunity and I’m extremely excited to start this new journey as a BSU Bear along with these young ladies,” said Mr. Gomes. “I’m going to give this program everything I have so we can bring it back to where it belongs.” (Story by Michael Holbrook)

If you have an emergency in East Bridgewater, Angela Pucci may be the one to summon help or walk you through first aid over the phone.

Angela, a Bridgewater State University student who is studying criminal justice and plans to finish her classes this fall, has turned an internship at the East Bridgewater Police Department this summer into a full-time job as dispatcher.

“You get an adrenaline rush when you hear that phone ring,” the Abington resident said. “You don’t know what’s on the other end of the line, and you always have to be ready.”

Angela is learning the ropes from department employees and undergoing training in preparation for her new job. She is among a number of students from BSU and other local schools who have held internships since the department began the program five years ago.

The internships are part of a multi-faceted partnership with Bridgewater State. The department, BSU police, and other law enforcement agencies around Plymouth County are also working together to combat the opioid crisis and connect people to treatment and available resources.

“Instead of each individual community trying to do its own work, we’ve just collaborated across those jurisdictional boundaries,” East Bridgewater Chief Scott Allen said. “Bridgewater State’s played a key role in that.”

BSU students also aid East Bridgewater police in checking whether establishments holding liquor licenses sell to underage individuals. The department taps interns who are under 21 to conduct the compliance checks. Police send students into the businesses to attempt to buy alcohol. If they are successful, police refer the establishment to selectmen for potential punishment.

“It gives the intern a little bit of experience and gets them out there (with police),” said Deputy Chief Paul O’Brien.

While Angela is too old to participate in compliance checks, she has ample opportunities to learn first-hand about policing. She has gone for ride-alongs with officers, including an instance where police pulled over a driver for speeding. The internship introduces students to all aspects of the department, from making an arrest, to interacting with courts, to investigating crimes, to serving in schools.

Angela, who hopes to eventually become a police officer, has showcased her aptitude and attitude through her internship.

“In Angela’s case, we learned about her work ethic,” said Deputy Chief O’Brien. “I liked the drive she showed.”

In addition to helping her land a job, Angela said she gained more confidence through the internship. And, it reaffirmed the career choice of the one-time accounting major who hopes to make a difference in other people’s lives through policing.

While she’ll be juggling her work and school responsibilities, Angela is committed to meeting the challenge.

“I can do it,” she said.  (Story and photos by Brian Benson, University News)

It sounded as if a swarm of bees had descended on University Park last week, but the buzzing noise was created by the circling drones being flown by GeoGraphics Lab Co-directorsDr. Lawrence Harman and Dr. Uma Shama. The pair were putting on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) demonstration for the visiting Mandela Washington fellows.

During the presentation, Dr. Harman shared the different ways drones are being used at BSU’s LivingLab.

“All they really are are flying cameras,” he said.

The LivingLab is a concept created by Mr. Harman and Dr. Shama. The idea is to use the BSU campus to learn more about the potential uses of drone technology first hand. The cameras on the small drones help monitor BSU transportation infrastructures and operations, explore MBTA commuter rail stations and transit parking on campus, and aid police in traffic incident management and investigations.

“They are helping give us a more accurate picture, for example, in managing the parking lots,” Mr. Harman said.

It can take over an hour for a monitor to walk the lots and make sure cars are parked appropriately. Using a drone, the same task can be performed within five minutes, he said.

Local and university police are also using drones during tactical operations and exploring the possibility to include them during active shooter situations.

Mandela fellow Racheal Mpiriirwe Kaigo of Uganda appreciates the drones’ capabilities but questioned what could happen if put into the wrong hands.

“With time I can see these will become a security issue…What measures are in place to prevent this?” she asked.

Dr. Shama said researchers and manufacturers are continually seeking ways to address safety concerns.

“Security is a big issue,” she said. “They are working on establishing technology that will identify whether or not a drone is a foe, and, if so, then be able to immediately shut it down. There is a lot of research going on to find ways to take control if someone is misusing it.”

While drones have the potential be used in dangerous or destructive ways, Dr. Harman believes the benefits far outweigh the bad.

“They can do much more good than evil,” he said.

This is the third year Bridgewater was selected by the U.S. Department of the State to host a cohort from the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders. The 25 fellows arrived last month from Africa to participate in a six-week academic and leadership institute. Bridgewater State is one of only 27 institutions selected to serve as host for this year’s program. (Story by Heather Harris Michonski, University News)

Crisis Control

Nearly all organizations and companies, big and small, are at some point presented with a crisis they have to manage.

“The thing about a crisis is you never know when one is going to hit,” said Paul Jean, vice president of marketing and communications at Bridgewater State University.

Mr. Jean recently shared his expansive knowledge on crisis management with the visiting Mandela Washington fellows. Before coming to BSU three years ago, he enjoyed a long career in public relations, including as vice-president of the Boston-based agency Denterlein Worldwide. Previous clients included Boston Children’s Hospital and Ikea.

The best way to handle any crisis, Mr. Jean said, is to be prepared.

“Preparation can certainly help you. It’s important that organizations have some protocols in place so they know how to manage a crisis situation,” he said.

Before an incident occurs, companies should have a “crisis team” in place, with each member of that team aware of what their role is.

“Think about who you need to communicate with and do it ahead of time,” he said.

It’s also important to revisit the crisis team and management plan as the stakeholders of any organization often change.

“Not only do you want to have a plan in place and practice it, but you also need to maintain it,” Mr. Jean said.

Because of today’s social media platforms, information spreads quickly and isn’t always accurate. This can result in bad news or even misinformation going viral.

Once armed with all of the facts, it is essential to get to work addressing the situation.

“Crisis situations are never a good thing, but your response sometimes matters more than the event itself,” he said.

There are times when legal and private policies do not allow an organization to share all information. Even then, Mr. Jean said, the most important thing to do is, “be honest and speak with integrity.”

“You never give out false information,” he said.

Some of the fellows in attendance discussed how in many of their countries there is a lack of skilled crisis management workers. When a negative incident occurs, there is often fear that the government will shut the business down, therefore many do not respond and stay quiet.

“I don’t mean in any way to simplify it,” Mr. Jean said. “It’s all contextual and cultural, so some rules don’t apply in every situation,” Mr. Jean said. “But in my experience, it’s always better to take some modicum of responsibility than saying nothing at all.”

Tom Ross, ’94, sees himself as a steward of three of the nation’s key natural and historical resources.

“My job is to ensure they are there for this and future generations to learn about our great country,” said Mr. Ross, who has worked for the National Park Service for nearly 20 years and oversees three parks in the Mid-Atlantic states.

Mr. Ross, who majored in geography and history and minored in secondary education and business management while an undergraduate at Bridgewater State, is superintendent of Thomas Edison and Morristown national historical parks in New Jersey. He is also acting superintendent of Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, which stretches along the Delaware River on the Pennsylvania-New Jersey border.

Mr. Ross credits his Bridgewater experience, which includes helping start the Sigma Pi fraternity and studying abroad in Canada, with preparing him to be a leader in the National Park Service. He praised Bridgewater for helping him hone his writing skills and learn about history. He also volunteered in New Bedford during his time as a bear, service that helped him land a job with the coastal city.

“Bringing all of those pieces together really helped me in my career and gave me the platform to succeed and make it to where I am today,” said Mr. Ross, who also served in the Massachusetts Air National Guard while an undergraduate student.

Mr. Ross, who has a master’s degree in regional planning from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, began his National Parks Service career at the then-newly established New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park.

He currently oversees a diverse collection of properties. The approximately 70,000-acre Delaware Water Gap offers opportunities for hiking, boating, biking, fishing and hunting in a landscape marked by the 1,000-foot-deep water gap. Edison features Thomas Edison’s home and laboratory, while Morristown commemorates Gen. George Washington and the Continental Army’s encampment during the winter of 1779-1780.

Mr. Ross said he is proud of the partnerships built with organizations outside of the Park Service. The Washington Association of New Jersey, for example, helped fund a $2.5 million interactive exhibit at the Morristown park.

“I don’t take for granted the fact that working for the federal government is about public service and that each and every day I go to work to do the public’s business and be the caretaker of these special places that are owned by the American people,” he said. Focusing on Education in Africa

What if upon turning 13 or 14, your parents demanded that you drop out of school in order to get married, knowing that if you defied them you would no longer be welcome in their home, leaving you homeless?

This was the reality that Mandela Washington fellow Mariama Barry of Gambia faced as a teenager.

When presented with the choice, she knew her dream of an education was too important for her to give up on. Ms. Barry bravely left her parents’ house to live with an aunt in order to stay in school.

“I fought hard to be a successful lady,” she said.

Unfortunately, Ms. Barry’s story isn’t unique. Many girls in Africa are forced into marriage and told to abandon their education at an early age.

According to the BSU Mandela Washington fellows, there are other reasons as to why some African young people – boys and girls – struggle to earn a quality education. Teacher shortages, overpopulated schools, untrained teachers, outdated equipment, limited or no internet access, sexual harassment, poverty and an inability to travel, are just some examples of what African students face.

“You’ve got many things that affect your ability to become educated, competitive and successful,” said Harry K. Thomas, former U.S. Ambassador to Zimbabwe, who was on campus this week to lead a discussion on the topic with the visiting fellows.

During the presentation, the Mandela fellows shared with the ambassador the many difficulties they face in their quest for an education. From being propositioned for “favors” in return for a good grade, to a lack of technology and transportation, there are many hardships blocking the path to an education in Africa.

Ambassador Thomas questioned how the fellows individually overcame the odds.

“How are you here today?” he asked.

“Self-motivation,” many of them replied.

If solutions to these issues can be found, Ambassador Thomas hopes Africans will one day not have to travel and study abroad for a quality higher education. Unfortunately, he said, that hard-earned degree can sometimes mean nothing when students return to Africa.

“If you get a degree from Harvard in engineering, it might be hard to find a job back home. The goal is to have your generation stay home and do well,” Ambassador Thomas said. “It’s not easy to find success in Africa. It is hard to obtain success.”

Ambassador Thomas praised the fellows for working so hard.

“It’s tough being an individual, to have to fight all the time, to get an education,” he said. (Story and photos by Heather Harris Michonski, University News)

Living History

Lauren Enoksen recently stepped about 400 years back in time, and in doing so she picked up ideas for her modern-day Dartmouth High School social studies classes.

Ms. Enoksen spent a week at Plimoth Plantation, taking a summer course offered through a partnership between Bridgewater State University and the living-history museum that features a recreated 17th Century colonial village and Wampanoag homesite.

“I liked the idea that it was hands-on and that it was at Plimoth Plantation,” said Ms. Enoksen, who first visited the museum when she was an elementary school student.

The graduate-level course, which is geared to school educators and staff and taught by Plimoth Plantation’s Vicki Oman, is called Early American Communities in Conflict and Collaboration: Teaching 17th Century Plimoth. The class also features online elements.

The on-site portion focused on written, oral and other primary sources. Students visited downtown Plymouth during a lesson on maps, and explored the architecture on display at the museum. They also looked at reproduction objects used in exhibits and learned about historians’ efforts to uncover how processes such as making clothes were accomplished centuries ago.

“Part of what we do at Plimoth Plantation is to use archaeological evidence to try to recreate processes from the 17th century,” said Ms. Oman, the director of museum programs and school services at Plimoth and a senior visiting instructor at BSU.

But archaeology can be a difficult process. Some digs take archaeologists to remote locations or, in the case of Plymouth Colony, beneath a modern-day, fully developed town where many remnants of colonial life have been destroyed.

Dr. Kathryn Ness, Plimoth’s curator of collections, compared it to working on a jigsaw puzzle when you only have a couple pieces. And, archaeology is about much more than digging, since finds must be dated and interpreted in an effort unlock the mysteries of the past, Dr. Ness told the class.

The course is part of an evolving relationship between BSU and Plimoth that began with BSU students serving as interns at the museum.

“Our relationship with Bridgewater has developed in a really beautiful way,” said Ms. Oman. “Our mutual goal is to be able to educate with this story in a way that is very relevant.”

Class participant Alyssa Walsh, G’19, a middle school social studies teacher at Rising Tide Charter Public School in Plymouth, said she was excited to discover history in her own backyard. Ms. Walsh and Ms. Enoksen were eager to learn how to bring hands-on activities to their classrooms.

Often, the only primary sources teachers rely on are written texts, Ms. Enoksen said.

Ms. Oman hopes participants came away with ideas they can use when teaching, as well as a greater understanding of this important era of history. Course participants also shared how they are teaching in their schools, helping museum staff ensure its mission remains relevant, she said.

“It’s an opportunity for us as well,” she said. “It’s really a joy to share who and what we are, and to share it with other people who also love to bring others into the story, even better.” (Story by Brian Benson, University News)

One of the first things Dr. Joseph Oravecz did after settling in as Bridgewater State University’s new vice president of student affairs and enrollment management was take a ride into Boston on the MBTA commuter rail.

Upon disembarking the train, the memories came flooding back. It had been many years since Dr. Oravecz had last set foot in the city.

“A lot has changed, but in some ways nothing has changed,” he said.

As a young undergraduate at Gettysburg College, the Connecticut native didn’t have a clear idea where his life was going. After earning his degree, Dr. Oravecz learned two friends were moving to Boston to pursue careers in research.

With no real plans, he decided to tag along.

At first Dr. Oravecz considered law school and found a job in the city as a paralegal. The work didn’t appeal to him, so three months in, he left. It was a former employer who sparked his next adventure, one that would have a lasting impact.

As a college student, Dr. Oravecz worked as a tour guide. It was his tour guide coordinator that suggested he explore being an admissions counselor. After scouring the want ads in the Boston Globe, he came across an opening for an admissions counselor, applied and thus began his career in higher education.

His work took him away from New England to Ohio where he served as associate vice president for student affairs at Bowling Green State University. From there he moved on to dean of the Division of Student Affairs at the University of Nebraska Kearney. Prior to arriving at BSU he was vice chancellor for student affairs at Montana State University-Billings.

It took the right job to bring Dr. Oravecz back to his New England roots. After learning of the opening at BSU, he did his research and concluded that the position would be a good fit.

“The mission of achieving student success is very important to me,” he said. “I believe there is leadership in place here that can make that happen.”

President Frederick W. Clark Jr. said of Dr. Oravecz, "He is a thoughtful, engaging, inclusive and collaborative leader who shares BSU’s deep commitment to student success, and I look forward to working with him in the years ahead."

Dr. Oravecz said his goal is to guide students, who were once just like him, and help them find their paths to success. That includes students from all constituent groups, he said.

To accomplish this, it’s important to reach across the campus community and build as many relationships as possible, Dr. Oravecz said. This ensures the use of best practices on how to “help students succeed outside of the classroom so that they can succeed inside of the classroom.”

“It’s so important to get different perspectives and philosophies,” he said.

If you happen to run into Dr. Oravecz, don’t be shy; he welcomes to the opportunity to listen and is on the lookout to build new relationships.

“I am so excited to be here,” he said. (Story by Heather Harris Michonski, University News)

A Universe of Health Care

As he spoke to a group of young leaders from Africa, Dr. John Meara brought up sobering statistics about health care around the world.

For instance:

  • 5 billion people lack access to safe, affordable surgical care and anesthesia
  • 143 million additional surgical procedures are needed each year
  • 81 million people annually face catastrophic expenses as a result of surgery and anesthesia

And, the consequences of inadequate care ripple across a region, harming individuals and whole countries, said Dr. Meara, Kletjian professor of global surgery at Harvard Medical School and plastic surgeon-in-chief at Boston Children’s Hospital.

“If an 18-year-old has a femur fracture that doesn’t get fixed, then that person could be knocked out of the workforce for the next 60 years,” he told Bridgewater State University’s Mandela Washington fellows during a recent visit to Boston Children’s Hospital. Things like that can have “a huge impact on a country’s economy.”

Dr. Meara also discussed his involvement with The Lancet Commission on Global Surgery, which compiled the above statistics in a report. Despite the gloomy data, he offered signs of hope. Countries are developing plans to improve access to surgery and Dr. Meara and others continue to advocate for support from worldwide organizations.

The fellows’ visit also included a tour of the hospital’s Simulator Program, which mimics operating, trauma and ICU rooms as well as a child’s bedroom. The simulators feature the same equipment doctors and nurses use in real procedures. But, here they can practice on mannequins before working with living patients.

You’d be forgiven, though, if you thought the mannequins were actually alive.

Some mimic the beating of a human heart or shake to simulate a seizure, said Kaitlyn Nogueira, simulation technical operations manager, who led a tour of the facility. Fellows eagerly donned stethoscopes to try to listen for heartbeats.

Simulation center staff can even create models of a patient’s unique anatomy and print it out on a 3D printer, allowing doctors to practice with the model before the actual surgery.

Fellows with a background in medicine were amazed at the technology. In Africa, hospitals are more primitive. Some struggle to find trained workers and reliable supplies of clean water, they said.

“There’s a whole world of difference,” said fellow Dr. Bernard Ziem of Ghana. “I’m so excited to have this experience of witnessing medical possibilities in different countries.”

Dr. Elvio Pereira of Cabo Verde, said his country is an island chain, presenting a challenge because specialists cannot be on every island.

“What we’re finding is every country has unique issues,” said Dr. Meara. “There are no simple answers. You have a transportation issue that Tanzania doesn’t have.”

Fellows said they appreciate United States doctors’ support of their African colleagues.

That support includes Children’s Global Health Program, which has worked in dozens of countries. The program, for example, helped a Ghana hospital begin performing pediatric heart surgeries, said Dr. Michelle Niescierenko, the program’s director.

“This experience gives me hope because I think with good partnerships, good connections and good networking, you can resolve many problems,” said Dr. Yoan Mboussou, a fellow from Gabon.

Bridgewater State University’s Mandela Washington fellows visited the Massachusetts Statehouse recently to join in a celebration marking the centenary of Nelson Mandela’s birth.

The fellows participated in a ceremony in the Great Hall of Flags to honor South Africa’s first democratically elected president. Here are BSU fellows’ thoughts about President Mandela, who died in 2013:

KIRSTEN HORNBY, South Africa: “It wasn’t just that he made South Africa into a democracy, he laid down the interests of himself and desire for retribution against the people who oppressed him for decades.”

MARTHA GURARO, Ethiopia: “Most people in my country view Nelson Mandela as a sign of freedom, persistence, love and unity. We are so grateful for his values. Because of Mandela and his wonderful principles, we are changing the nation. His values still work in leadership today.”

UMAR FARUK KABIR, Nigeria: He admires President Mandela’s “personal values of peace and forgiveness” and his political skill to “use resources at the time that they mattered most.”

Fellows also discussed bringing President Mandela’s values to the work they do at home and beyond.

JOHANN HENRICH KRIGE, South Africa: “The challenges we face as a country and continent are vast. The thing I’d like to see more of in our leaders is the concept of public service — something that Mandela modeled.”

MS. HORNBY: “Mandela’s legacy is about recognizing the humanity of people who are different (than) me. I must make sure that I am modeling that leadership and inspire people around me to model that leadership.”

MS. GURARO: What “we have learned in the past month at Bridgewater State University — and what we have experienced … amongst ourselves as representatives of 18 African countries — is that democracy is a painful process. It’s not easy, even here in the U.S. I think it’s on us to work on our institutions; we have so much to do. I feel that as a young leader, we need to walk that long walk that Mandela started — and as Mandela said, ‘No one is free unless all of us are free.’”

For his latest research project, Bridgewater State University’s Dr. Thilina Surasinghe is returning to his roots.

Dr. Surasinghe, who came to the United States from Sri Lanka in 2008 and has been at BSU for four years, recently received a $5,000 grant from the Chicago Zoological Society to study amphibians in his native country.

The assistant professor of biological sciences will research creatures of the Knuckles Conservation Area, a biodiversity-rich mountainous rainforest where humans farm. He will work with his long-term collaborator,Sameera Karunarathna, a wildlife biologist with Nature Exploration and Education Team in Sri Lanka, on a study expected to continue for several years.

“We know not all landscapes with conservation values can be protected by the government,” said Dr. Surasinghe, who will focus on producing survey protocols, statistical and geospatial analyses, writing and related tasks for his part of the project. “We are interested in studying what kind of wildlife exists in this unprotected wilderness.”

The mountain range is isolated, and has unique climate and vegetation with farming taking place particularly at lower elevations. The researchers plan to study all types of amphibians, although they expect to mostly find Old World bush frogs.

Dr. Surasinghe is also part of a team that received a grant from The Rufford Foundation to study Sri Lankan lizards. Through these efforts he hopes to discover ways humans can better live in the natural world.

“Without changing land ownership, how could we still promote conservation?” he said. “What is the harmony between human land use and conservation? Does that really exist and, if so, how?”

He added: “We need government-owned conservation lands, but we also want to explore how every individual landowner can contribute to conservation.” (Story by Brian Benson, University News)
