Professor Phyllis Gimbel leads two events at Harvard
November 4-6 Harvard University will hold its first-ever Women’s Alumni Weekend, and BSU’s Dr. Phyllis Gimbel will be involved with two of the key events.
Women’s Alumni Weekend is a celebration and introspective examination of issues that are of interest to alumnae worldwide. It will be held in locations across the Harvard campus.
Dr. Gimbel, of the Secondary Education and Professional Programs Department was invited to moderate the Saturday morning panel, “Don’t STEM the Tide: Advancing Gender Equality in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.” Her daughter, Emilie Liebhoff, will serve on the panel.
Dr. Gimbel and Ms. Liebhoff will co-lead a breakout session that afternoon. Ms. Liebhoff is director of enrollment management at Dedham Country Day School and founder of Moms as Mentors, a nonprofit devoted to STEM education and promoting the idea of mothers as role models for their daughters.
The various programs associated with Women’s Alumni Weekend seek to highlight a number of different topics to audiences varying in size from 100-200, and potentially being webcast worldwide.
Dr. Madhavi Venkatesan gives two economics-related addresses
Dr. Madhavi Venkatesan, assistant professor of economics, will deliver the Alden B. Dow Lecture at Northwood University on November 17, as part of the University’s Global Entrepreneurship week. Northwood University is a conservative business-focused institution located in Michigan.
Her subject will be sustainability as it relates to economics and finance. Additionally, the Northwood Economics Department is adopting Dr. Venkatesan’s primer textbook, Foundations of Microeconomics and Foundational of Macroeconomics.
On Sept. 30, Dr. Venkatesan delivered an address, “Market prices, externalities and the significance of conscious consumption decisions,” at this year’s EconED16 Conference (billed as a TED Talk for economics).

Administrators, faculty member and students to attend Women’s Leadership Retreat
The weekend of Nov. 5 approximately 50 undergraduate and graduate students will attend the Women’s Leadership Retreat.
The off-campus retreat is designed for students of all levels of leadership experience. During the two-day event, the students will enjoy the opportunity to expand both their knowledge and skills in individual, group and community leadership.
Serving as facilitators at the retreat are administrators Jennifer True, Jeanean Davis-Street, Mary Waldron, Roopa Rawjee,Pamela Witcher, Maribeth Flakes, Sydné Marrow and Danielle Johnson. Faculty member Jessica Birthisel (communicaiton studies) will also facilitate.
This is the third year the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership has sponsored the retreat.
