Thomas Koshy, professor emeritus at Framingham State University, visited campus to discuss his new book, while also speaking highly of the late Dr. Thomas Moore, to whom the textbook is dedicated.
But first, there was some problem solving.
“Math is not spectator sport,” Professor Koshy said. Proving this, he passed out graph paper so those in attendance could try their hand at a few math problems.
His new book is Pell and Pell-Lucas Numbers with Applications, which, in the words of its publisher, “offer(s) opportunities for experimentation, exploration, conjecture, and problem-solving techniques, connecting the fields of analysis, geometry, trigonometry, and various areas of discrete mathematics, number theory, graph theory, linear algebra, and combinatorics.”
Professor Koshy and Dr. Moore were longtime friends. The latter was a mathematics professor who dedicated his career to the department and students of BSU. In memory of his late friend, Professor Koshy presented a copy of his newly published textbook to Professor Moore’s family to acknowledge his accomplishments.
