The Department of Criminal Justice held its 12th annual career night, bringing together 30 community partners ranging from the Massachusetts State Police to the U. S. Secret Service.

Dr. Jo-Ann Della Giustina, professor of criminal justice and internship coordinator, shared her advice with those who jammed the Campus Center ballroom for the event.

“Get to know your professors, have your professors know you, do internships and network.”

That last point could have easily served as the night’s theme.

“You are navigating your personal narrative, you are the guardian of your personal narrative, make smart choices, always be open to learning, and network,” said Maj. Tony Thomas, of the state police.

That networking can take many forms. Benjamin Thomas, ’07, received his legislative aide job for state Rep. Jim Cantwell through a simple Facebook message.

“I would encourage you to use social media. You guys are the experts at it,” he told the gathered students. “How you get jobs is applying the knowledge and the skills here in the real world, networking, and choosing your classes wisely.”

Nine alumni were present to speak to current students about opportunities BSU has to offer that they should take advantage of. They also talked of their current jobs.

Randall Rose, ’15, was aware of his need to make connections, and thought this event was a great stepping stone for any criminal justice major.

“It's all about who you know,” he said. “Events like these are very important for not only criminal justice majors, but any major because it allows you to explore potential career paths that you didn't know were available to you.” (Story and photos by Caitlin Seddon, University News)
