After a multi-year effort by faculty that included a detailed self-study process and a three-day visit by a team of evaluators, the graduate program in clinical psychology recently reached a milestone, earning national accreditation from The Masters in Psychology and Counseling Accreditation Council.

The accreditation signifies that the program meets high professional standards. Awarded for four years, it could be extended another decade if the program makes several recommended changes.

“I’m proud of the people who worked to achieve this and am happy to know that our excellent students will continue to receive the highest quality graduate education,” said Dr. John Calicchia, a professor of psychology and graduate program coordinator.

The program offers an M.A. in psychology with a concentration in clinical psychology. Graduates frequently work as clinicians and teachers, and are eligible for licensure as mental health counselors.

“I think the culture of our program is unique since we have a small cohort program that welcomes a new class of approximately 15 students each fall,” Dr. Calicchia said. “It provides students with a very close mentoring relationship with faculty.”

In an e-mail to Dr. Calicchia, council chairwoman Dr. Sabina Widner wrote, “We congratulate you on your strong masters’ program and are delighted to have a program of your caliber join our ranks.” (University News)
