Across campus during the week of February 23-26, BSU will host its annual Social Media Awareness Week, featuring a variety of events and activities highlighting the importance of staying connected.
Ed Cabellon, assistant to the vice president of Student Affairs, said this is an important program, and one that’s open to all students and faculty.
“We all have a responsibility to learn about social media as it becomes more and more popular,” he said. “The sessions are established to teach both students and faculty members how to use social media platforms for both academics and in their professional lives.”
Mr. Cabellon said he hopes Social Media Awareness Week will allay fears about social media, and encourage more faculty to make use of the various technologies in the classroom. Students also need guidance in preparing for their future job searches using online tools such as Linkedin, he said.
As social media continues to be a force in society, it is important to know how make the most of each platform, Mr. Cabellon said. With the collaboration of Career Services and the New Student and Family Programs Office, the week will consist of luncheons and presentations to show how to use social media to effectively communicate and network with others.
Mr. Cabellon is enthusiastic about the upcoming week and hope more social media-related education will follow.
“I hope to see a first-year seminar in social media added to the curriculum. Many students do not realize the potential that their own digital presence can do for them in terms of professional and academic success,” he said.
Be sure to check out the schedule for all events and learn more information from the Office of Student Affairs. (Story by Heidi Belanger, University News)
