Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges is now known as the BSU Award for Student Excellence. The honor may go by a new name, but it still signifies student achievement in a number of key areas.

The award recognizes seniors whose experiences demonstrate a holistic approach to learning, and who participate in curricular and co-curricular activities that integrate learning and personal development. Those nominated must have a GPA of 3.0 to qualify and meet several other requirements (see below).

Graduating seniors can apply to be considered for the award. Meanwhile, faculty or staff can nominate deserving students.

Making the award special is the fact that is recognizes the whole of the student experience, said Matt Miller, associate director of Student Involvement and Leadership.

“Few awards recognize students who find balance in all aspects of their BSU career, celebrating their work in and out of the classroom, their contributions to their communities at BSU and beyond,” he said.

The criteria for this award are established by Bridgewater State University and selection is made by a committee of faculty, administrators and students. The following academic and co-curricular experiences are considered:

-Current 3.0 GPA

-Academic experiences that take place both in and out of the classroom such as honors work, undergraduate research, international study opportunities, field work, internships, special projects or employment related to academic work

-Co-curricular involvement  both on campus and in the community as evidenced by participation in community service, clubs, organizations, associations, committees or athletics; and/or exemplary leadership roles on campus or in the community

-Must be in good standing in accordance with the BSU Code of Conduct and Academic Integrity and Classroom Conduct Policies as stated in the Student Handbook

Applications and nominations are currently being accepted. The deadline for nominations is Jan. 23; students have until Feb. 6 at 5 p.m. to apply. More information can be found at the award’s website(Story by John Winters)
