The College of Education and Allied Studies has been selected as an Apple Distinguished School for 2014. Acceptance into the two-year program means BSU faculty and students will learn about best practices for using technology in the classroom and contribute feedback to the company concerning the university’s iPad initiative.
In announcing BSU’s acceptance into the program, Apple representatives said they look for institutions that provide an exemplary learning environment for innovation, leadership, and educational excellence.
Last year, the college made iPads a key part of its programs for all education majors, issuing the tablets to all full-time faculty and more than 1,600 students. The iPads allow the future educators to create individualized lessons for students, upload books, provide phonetic assistance, help build vocabulary, visit content-rich websites, and provide myriad apps for special education and other uses. These are among the skills today’s teachers need upon entering the workforce.
“This is transforming teaching and learning,” College of Education and Allied Sciences Dean Lisa Battaglino said at the time.
Designated an Apple Distinguished School, BSU can now reap the benefits of other institutions in the program and help shape the future of education on the cutting edge. (Story and photos by John Winters, G '11, University News)
