The Pedro Pires Institute for Cape Verdean Studies presented Dr. Ricardo Rosa as part of its Amilcar Cabral lecture series.

Dr. Rosa’s lecture focused on a variety of topics, including the life and work of Mr. Cabral, a political leader from the island, as well as the counterculture, and Cape Verdean hip-hop. All of this he related back to education and life.

“Cape Verdean hip-hop is one of the most important spaces of Cape Verdean counterculture presently,” Dr. Rosa said. “It is incredibility important because (it) crosses borders and acknowledges the powerful transnational identity we embody as people.”

“More so than the element, hip-hop is a culture,” he added.

Dr. Rosa’s current research centers on educational privatization and its effects on organizational behavior in educational settings and possibilities for transformative leadership. His research also focuses on curricular theory. He is a co-author of Pedagogy in the Age of Media Control: Language Deception and Digital Democracy. His forthcoming book is Capitalism's Educational Catastrophe: Towards a New End Game Activism.

Following his lecture, Dr. Rosa engaged with the audience, allowing questions and discussion. (Story and photos by Caitlin Seddon)
