The week of Nov. 17 – 21 marks International Education Week, and BSU will celebrate with a number of events.
BSU has an active international exchange program that’s growing all the time. The current semester saw International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) welcome 83 international students. The visitors hail from 20 different countries, Albania, Belize, Cambodia, Cape Verde, China, Hong Kong, Colombia, Haiti, India, Ireland, Japan, Jordan, Kenya, Nepal, Nigeria, Senegal, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Uzbekistan and Venezuela.
The 83 international students include transfer students from local and out-of-state institutions. When combined with continuing international students, the total number of foreign students currently at BSU is 130.
There are also three visiting scholars from China on campus this semester.
First held in 2000, and now celebrated in more than 100 countries, International Education Week is an annual joint initiative of the US Department of State and US Department of Education. Sponsored on the BSU campus by International Students and Scholars Services, IEW is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide.
The week’s schedule includes a Powwow, panel discussions, food, entertainment and much more, all designed to celebrate the many different cultures at BSU.
ISSS works to provide services and co-curricular programming to international students and scholars, assisting with immigration status, on- and off-campus employment authorization, and pre-arrival and re-entry information. In addition, ISSS facilitates informational workshops and cultural programs open to both the community and the region.
“Bridgewater State University continues to partner with institutions overseas to bring non-degree exchange students, and degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate students to campus in order to pursue a wide range of programs,” said Dr. Roopa Rawjee, Director of ISSS.
