The university hosted the annual National Native American Heritage Month Powwow. The event brought hundreds to campus to participate in a ceremony of drumming and dance that is central to the Native American experience.

“They dance for healing, for themselves, for their family. They dance for their creator. They dance for a number of different reasons,” said Dr. Joyce Rain Anderson, English professor and one of the organizers of the event.

As for the drumming that marks the powwow, she added, “That’s the heartbeat, the beat of Mother Earth.”
