Catherine Holmes, ’96, G ’03, has used her skills and knowledge of the art world to create “How to Draw Cool Stuff,” an instructional drawing book for teachers and students.

Ms. Holmes earned her visual arts teaching certification and masters in education in instructional technology from BSU, and also holds a bachelor of fine arts from Boston University.

Her book was designed to be a versatile teaching tool.

“I created this collection of step-by-step drawings presented together with educational information so that both teachers and students can benefit from it,” she said. “Each artwork page has an informational text page that accompanies it. The text outlines learning goals that guide curriculum development, frame lessons or units, and anchor assessments and learning activities.”

Ms. Holmes said her how-to book is unique. Hard work, research and ideas from her students went into it, she said.

“It is different from other how-to books as it includes not only art, but cross-curricular connections and teacher support. I like to think that this book has items in it that you can't find anywhere else,” she said.

Ms. Holmes credits BSU in helping her complete her book.

“Many of my classes helped me with my teaching, as well as with the writing of this book. Specifically, using different methods of teaching and differentiation skills to reach all levels students.”

This book is for everyone who wants an opportunity to draw, she said.

“As an artist, I believe that everyone has the ability to create beautiful things and using this book can aid in the process of learning how to draw,” she said.
