President Dana Mohler-Faria was recently serenaded by a group of student musicians and singers under the direction of Dr. Deborah Nemko, associate professor of music.

Dr. Nemko said the group of students has a mission, part of what’s called the Itinerant Music Project.

“We take our music to the community… so this fits right in. It’s a portable show.”

This is the second time the students have performed for the president. They’ve also played at the state prison and fund-raisers for Father Bill’s & Mainspring, homeless shelters south of Boston.

The student performers were Terry Doyon (flute), Jeremy Place (guitar and mandolin), Nolan Driscoll (guitar), Jiaying Zhu (voice), Alex Heinrich (piano), Richard Moran (voice), Brenner Campos (piano) and Kelsey Lynch (voice). They performed pieces by Mozart, Britten and Chopin, as well as a well-known tune from the musical “Guys and Dolls.”

The young people enjoyed performing in front of the president, Dr. Nemko said.

“The students were really jazzed by the opportunity,” she said.
